“HERE AND THERE” by Ödön von Horwath, Schlosstheater Celle, Germany 1994
A border crossing between two states. The absurd reality of closed borders, bureaucracy, restrictions, limitations and the forbidden. The scenography: An empty stage with only the absurd symbols of a border-crossing: the two flags, the fence and a bridge over the fence. The empty stage was hard to get as it was filled with exit signs and other fluorescent danger signs. They couldn’t be taken away or hidden. The law. What about supplementing them with 15 new signs; danger radioactivity, danger toxic gas, fire exit etc. The law didn’t say anything about this, so we could do it. Very dangerous of course, but in this way the scenography started to play its own play with the absurd reality of today’s Germany.
