“THE PEACE” by Aristophanos, La Cambre, Brussels 1986

The ancient Greek comedy tells the story of a farmer that is tired from all the wars. He flies to the Heaven on a beetle and finds the goddess of peace locked up in a cave by the war-god. The farmer gets the peace-goddess out and takes her back to the earth. Back home he finds out that many people are angry that there is peace, and that war is actually good business…
The idea was to make this simple but true statement about war and peace into a spectacular event. All the characters are played by 10 actors in a circus-like aesthetics. In order to follow the farmer on his journey to the heaven the spectators have to dress up in “cloud-costumes”. They all become blue cloud-ponchos before entering the circular theatre space. Sitting around a circus-like ring covered with a “heaven”-mat the spectators become the scenography. In the break before the farmer travels down to the earth, the spectators leave their ponchos on stage. When they re-enter the theatre room the “heaven”-mat has been exchanged with a “earth”-mat and sitting around in their normal clothing the spectators become the scenography for the earth…
