Medea

Two young men play Medea and Jason sitting on two chairs. – In this minimalist adaption of Euripides’ text I use the fact that one of the actors is a foreigner and not mastering the Norwegian language to create a genuine and real tension between the two characters. Jason, the native speaker the man, constantly corrects Medea, the foreigner the woman. The actor playing Medea makes no attempt to play a woman, Medea’s arguments clearly states the gender issue and the persistent corrections from Jason creates some kind of inequality we could relate to gender conflicts. The universal line of emotions from love via betrayal and hate to murder becomes even more terrifying when all the expected images are taken away from the spectators, even the image of a woman and a man…
